How we research and verify listings

What we check, how we label what we cannot confirm, and how to tell us when we are wrong.

OneHungryHippo lists vegetarian and vegan places in Singapore and Malaysia. This page explains where the information comes from and how we word it, so you know how far to trust each line on a listing.

Where the facts come from

The basics of each listing (name, address, opening hours, price band, what is on the menu) come from the business itself, its own website and social pages, public listings, and crowdsourced contributions from our community. Opening hours and closures are checked against the latest public information. A place that has permanently closed is marked clearly and kept on the site with a banner, so you do not make a wasted trip.

How we describe diets

In Singapore, vegetarian does not automatically mean no egg, no onion and no garlic, and most stalls do not say. So we use three levels. Confirmed: the business, or a published listing of it, states it. Diners say: reviewers mention it but the business has not stated it, and we word it that way. Not confirmed: we do not know, and we tell you to ask. The No Onion & Garlic and Egg-Free labels appear only for places that state it themselves.

Reviews and what diners say

Reviews on a listing come from our own members and from publicly available sources. The What diners say block is a short summary we write of points that come up repeatedly in public reviews. It reports diners' opinions and is not a statement of fact by us.

Prices, hours and menus

The price band is a guide to cost: $ is budget-friendly, $$ is mid-range and $$$ is upscale. Menu prices are what the business listed when we checked. Stalls change their prices and rest days without notice, so check before a long trip.

Keeping listings current

Every listing has a button to suggest an edit or report a problem, and we read every report. Our guides show when they were last reviewed.

Spotted a mistake?

Tell us through the Suggest an edit button on the listing, or write to us on the contact page. We would rather fix it than leave it wrong.
