Top 10 vegetarian food in Bugis and Fortune Centre you must try
26 places on OneHungryHippo · reviewed October 2026
Ask any long-time vegetarian in Singapore where to eat and Fortune Centre comes up in the first breath. This slightly worn 1980s block at 190 Middle Road, right in the Bugis and Rochor stretch of town, holds the single biggest concentration of vegetarian food anywhere on the island. More than a dozen vegetarian restaurants and hawker stalls are packed across its floors, turning out meat-free versions of nearly every Singapore favourite: laksa, Hokkien mee, char kway teow, economy rice, yong tau foo, claypot, mock-meat zi char, plus Buddhist-style set meals, kueh and cold-pressed juices. If you love a good vegetarian food hunt, this is where you go first.
Nearly everything inside Fortune Centre is fully meat-free and seafood-free, and a big share is Buddhist vegetarian, which also leaves out egg, onion and garlic, so a lot of it is vegan by default. Step back outside and the options keep coming across Bugis and Rochor: sit-down vegetarian restaurants near Jalan Besar and Queen Street, a couple of fully vegan spots, and stalls tucked around Berseh Food Centre. Bugis MRT, Rochor MRT and Bras Basah MRT all leave you a short walk from the lot.
Fortune Centre at 190 Middle Road is the reason this is one of the densest vegetarian areas in Singapore: 16 of the 26 places in this guide are inside that one building, about three minutes from Bencoolen MRT. Between them they cover Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, Indian and Western food, from $5 noodle stalls to restaurants where mains cost $20 or more. The rest are spread around Queen Street, Jalan Besar and Rochor Road, including Berseh Food Centre and Fu Lu Shou Complex.

Good to know
- Getting there: Fortune Centre sits on the corner of Middle Road and Waterloo Street, about a five-minute walk from Bugis MRT (exits B and C). Rochor MRT and Bras Basah MRT are just as close. Look for the boxy building with the yellow trim.
- Come for lunch. The stalls inside cook for the weekday lunch rush, so noon to 1pm is when every stall is open and the spread is biggest. Turn up mid-afternoon and you will still eat well, just with fewer dishes left.
- Give yourself time to wander. The ground floor and the third floor hold most of the food, and half the fun is walking a full loop before you decide. The choice really is enormous.
- Stricter diet? You are spoilt here. Many stalls are proper Buddhist vegetarian (斋), so no egg, no dairy, no onion and no garlic. If a dish matters, just ask the stallholder, they are used to the question.
- Carry a bit of cash. Most stalls take PayNow these days, but a few of the older hawkers still prefer notes and coins.
- Weekends, and the first and fifteenth day of the lunar month, get busy. Vesak Day is shoulder to shoulder. Wonderful atmosphere, longer queues.
- Rest days inside Fortune Centre are staggered, so one closed shop rarely means a closed building: New Green Pasture Cafe is closed on Mondays, Jaspat International on Tuesdays and Green Bliss Habitat on Thursdays. Most places close between 7pm and 9:45pm.
- If you avoid egg or garlic, ask first. Several places here state it: Tracy Juice Culture says no egg, garlic, onion or dairy, Jaspat International sells egg substitutes, and Living Wholesome says no garlic is used.

Common questions
- Where is Fortune Centre in Singapore and how do I get there?
- Fortune Centre is at 190 Middle Road, on the corner of Waterloo Street, in the Bugis area of Singapore. It is about a five-minute walk from Bugis MRT, and Rochor MRT and Bras Basah MRT are close by. The vegetarian food is spread over several floors, with most of it on the ground floor and the third floor.
- Is Fortune Centre vegetarian food also vegan?
- A lot of it is. Every stall is meat-free and seafood-free, and many are Buddhist vegetarian, so they also leave out egg, dairy, onion and garlic. That makes much of the food vegan by default. A few dishes still use egg, so check with the stall if you need to be sure.
- What vegetarian dishes can I get at Fortune Centre?
- Almost anything you would find at a normal hawker centre, done meat-free: laksa, Hokkien mee, char kway teow, economy rice (cai fan), yong tau foo, claypot rice and bee hoon, plus mock-meat zi char, Buddhist set meals, kueh, desserts and fresh juices. Prices run from a few dollars for a hawker plate up to a proper sit-down meal.
- When is the best time to visit Fortune Centre for vegetarian food?
- Weekday lunch, roughly noon to 1pm, when every stall is open and the choice is widest. Many stalls wind down by mid to late afternoon, so it is a lunch destination more than a dinner one.
- Which vegetarian places in Bugis are open after 9pm?
- Xing Hua Vegetarian Restaurant at 190 Middle Road is open until 9:45pm daily, and Seva Cafe until 9:30pm. Moon Chay Vegetarian closes at 9pm, and Supreme Vege at 9:30pm on most days.
- Which MRT station is closest to Fortune Centre?
- Bencoolen MRT is about three minutes on foot from Fortune Centre at 190 Middle Road. Bugis MRT and Bras Basah MRT are the nearest stations for the Queen Street places.
