About OneHungryHippo

Built by and for the vegetarian & vegan community in Singapore and Malaysia.

OneHungryHippo is a directory of vegetarian and vegan restaurants, cafes, and hawker stalls across Singapore and Malaysia — built to make it easy to find a proper meal, not just a side-salad afterthought, wherever you happen to be in the city.

Why we built this

Singapore's vegetarian and vegan community lost its best resource when abillionveg shut down — for a while there was no dedicated place to find vegetarian and vegan food here, beyond scattered Google Maps lists and word of mouth. HappyCow, the biggest global directory of its kind, has never indexed Singapore (or Asia generally) very deeply. We started OneHungryHippo to fill that gap properly: a directory built specifically for Singapore, by someone who actually eats here.

Who's behind it

OneHungryHippo is run by Derek Low, who grew up vegetarian in Singapore and has spent years finding (and re-finding, and recommending) the city's best vegetarian and vegan spots. The listings you see started from a personal, hand-curated list of Singapore vegetarian food built over years of actually eating at these places — not a scrape of a review site.

How the data works

Every listing on the site has real, verified basics: name, address, cuisine, and whether it's vegetarian, vegan, or offers vegetarian/vegan options. Where a listing shows reviews or photos sourced from Google Maps, they're clearly labelled "via Google Maps" so you always know what's community-contributed and what isn't. We're actively building out our own community review and photo system so this becomes less necessary over time.

What's next

The OneHungryHippo app is live now on the App Store and Google Play, so you can carry the directory with you wherever hunger strikes. Along the way we're adding community features (reviews, a discussion forum, a points system that rewards genuine contributions) to make this a place the community actually builds together, not just a static list.
